Chinese Toddler Crushing: Aftermath & Speculations
The way that a toddler in China was crushed by a truck and then ignored by passersby for seven minutes has triggered introspection in China and scrutiny and theorizing around the world.
First, her condition: The two-year-old Yueyue’s father, in a telephone interview with The Epoch Times on Oct. 17, said she is still in a critical condition at the intensive care unit at the General Hospital of Guangzhou Military Command. Her face is swollen, her eyes do not move, and she is in a deep coma, according to the interview. The doctor told the media that she is not dead, as some reports had alleged; the crucial question, he said, is whether she will be able to breathe on her own. That’s not yet established.
Behind the Neglect
Immediately, one of the most salient features of Yueyue’s case was not the fact that she was crushed per se, but that 18 bystanders did nothing to help for a full seven minutes. In the end it was a scrap peddler who stepped in to rescue the child and secure help.
This has met with a variety of explanations: CNN trotted out experts who attempted to normalize the neglect with modern psychological theory; bloggers have mused about other possible causes.
Another perspective lurks in the background: that this is the fault of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Let us sit quietly for a moment and consider:
